AVOID - Airborne Volcanic Object Infrared Detector
The AVOID system is a tactical awareness device for providing real-time imagery of hazards ahead of a jet aircraft. Information is supplied to the cockpit from two fast-sampling, imaging infrared cameras that are tuned to detect hazardous volcanic ash particles in the airspace up to 100 km ahead of the aircraft day or night. At normal fl ight cruising altitudes and speeds this will give a pilot-7 - 10 minutes warning of a potential dangerous encounter with an ash cloud. AVOID software is used to convert the image signal into ash concentrations, providing an indication of levels from less than 1 mg m-3 to over 50 mg m-3. When coupled with GPS and airspeed data, “ash dosages” can be quickly determined and displayed in real-time. The information can also be relayed back to air-traffi c control centres or to other aircraft not equipped with the AVOID system.

The system is developed and sold through
Nicarnica Aviation AS.

Envicam-1 Multispectral Imaging Camera
The challenge of measuring plumes of gases and pollution has been solved by a new multi-spectral imaging camera from Nicarnica AS. The camera use a high quantum efficiency detector sensitive down to wavelengths of 280 nm. A filter wheel housing up to 9 filters provides spectral selection of radiation so that specific gases can be isolated and quantified. Rapid sampling of 1 Hz can be achieved by measuring radiation through one filter continuously.

Envicam-1 has been used at active volcanoes and has also been used at industrial plants to measure gases, including industrial plumes from a power plant in Romania. Measurements like these can assess the emission rates of gases and help to mitigate adverse effects on the environment and human health.

NicAIR Infrared Multispectral Imaging Camera
NicAIR is a multispectral infrared imaging camera designed for portable, fi eld use at volcanoes and industrial settings. The system is capable of detecting and quantifying SO2 gas and particulates and can sample at frequencies up to 1 Hz. The camera measures thermal radiation emitted and absorbed by gases and particles in plumes and clouds, and by using specialised software, the captured images can be transformed into column abundances of SO2 or particulate mass loadings ( in gm-2). Feature tracking in the plume makes it possible to measure fluxes.
