Cooperation between Nicarnica/NILU and EasyJet

A joint announcement between Nicarnica, NILU and EasyJet with the support of the UK Civil Aviation Authority took place in London on June 4th. The announcement comes just weeks after Europe experienced its greatest disruption to aviation due to volcanic ash as a result of the eruption of Eyjafjallajoekull in Iceland.

The solution named AVOID™ uses two Infra-Red cameras with frequency specific filters and proprietary algorithms which distinguish volcanic ash from water vapor. The cameras could be mounted in the tail of the aircraft and then attached to a processor with a final output relayed to the cockpit so pilots could be alerted to detected ash. It is estimated that when at altitude the system could detect ash at least 100 km in the distance thus giving the pilots 6-7 minutes warning to make adjustments to their flight path and relay the information to ground authorities.
